Organ Shortages Critical for
South Asian Population
There are currently over 5340* people
waiting for an organ transplant in the UK. The
situation for the Asian population is critical, particularly in the West
Midlands where it is estimated that patients of Asian origin will comprise
50% of the waiting list by the year 2000. This compares with just
0.6% of donors coming from the Asian population in the 6 year period upto
1996. The national picture is little better where the Asian population
comprises 3.5% of the UK total, compared to a disproportionately high number
-- an estimated 18-20% -- on the transplant waiting list.
Asian
Leukaemia Crisis Appeal
Ram
Gidoomal, Chairman, and Deepak Mahtani, Organ Donation Campaign Director
of South Asian Development Partnership and Executive Committee Member
of TIME (Transplants in Mind) wholly endorse the Asian Leukaemia
Crisis Appeal.
We
have been working to increase the awareness within the South Asian community
of the health needs in terms of Organ Donation and Transplantation for
the past 5 years. We would encourage all Asians to take this initaitive
seriously if we are to alleviate the long waiting lists for people on
transplants. Part of the solution to our health problems rests with
each one of us and we all have a shared responsibility.
